This advanced 5-day course provides a deep dive into the Dell PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM) ecosystem. As organizations move toward software-defined data centers, PPDM offers a centralized platform to protect, govern, and manage data across on-premises, virtual, and cloud-native environments.

This course is designed to take technical professionals from foundational concepts to expert-level administration. It covers the deployment of the PPDM appliance and the integration of enterprise-grade applications including Microsoft Exchange, SQL, Oracle, SAP HANA, and Kubernetes. Through extensive hands-on labs, students will master the “governed self-service” model—allowing application owners to manage their own backups while IT retains oversight through Service Level Objectives (SLOs).

  • Concepts & Features: Introduction to the PPDM microservices architecture and discovery engine.

  • Deployment: Deploying the PPDM OVA on vCenter, including post-installation tasks and initial configuration.

  • Security & RBAC: Configuring user roles, identity providers (AD/LDAP), and credential security.

Module 2: VMware Virtual Machine Protection

  • Transparent Snapshots: Mastering the Transparent Snapshots Data Mover (TSDM) for near-zero impact VM backups.

  • VM Direct Engines: Configuring external VM Direct Engines for scalable protection.

  • Restore Workflows: VM-level recovery, individual disk restore, and File-Level Restore (FLR).

Module 3: Kubernetes & Cloud-Native Integration

  • Asset Discovery: Registering Kubernetes clusters and namespaces.

  • Persistent Volume Protection: Backing up PVCs using CSI and non-CSI storage.

  • Disaster Recovery: Quick recovery of namespaces to alternate Kubernetes clusters.

Module 4: Enterprise Database Integration

  • Microsoft SQL & Exchange: Application-aware backups, log truncation, and granular recovery.

  • Oracle RMAN Integration: Leveraging the PowerProtect Agent for Oracle to perform self-service backups.

  • SAP HANA: Integrating PPDM with SAP HANA Studio and the hdbbackint interface.

Module 5: Administration & Governance

  • Protection Policies: Creating SLA-driven policies for centralized and self-service management.

  • Storage Management: Integrating PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) and configuring Cloud Tiering.

  • Search Engine: Setting up Search Engine nodes to index and find file-level data across copies.

Module 6: Troubleshooting, Upgrades, and Add-ons

  • System Health: Monitoring through the dashboard, CloudIQ, and SupportAssist.

  • Upgrades: Best practices for upgrading the PPDM server and application agents.

  • Advanced Tools: Concepts of Cloud Snapshot Manager (AWS/Azure) and vProtect (Multi-hypervisor).

Hands-On Lab Exercises

  1. System Setup: Deploy the PPDM appliance and configure the initial protection storage.

  2. VM Protection: Enable TSDM and perform a “Instant Access” VM restore.

  3. Database Operations: Install the Microsoft SQL agent and perform a point-in-time database recovery.

  4. K8s Lab: Protect a Kubernetes namespace and restore it to a different target cluster.

  5. Troubleshooting: Analyze log bundles and resolve simulated protection job failures.
