HVAC Repair and Technology Program Overview
The HVAC Repair and Technology Program is a hands-on, 5-week training
track that prepares students for entry-level employment in the heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration trades. Students train in person at our Miami campus, working with
real equipment and real tools alongside a certified instructor.
No prior experience is required. The program starts at the beginning — safety, basic
electricity, tools and refrigeration principles — and builds to system diagnostics and repair
on residential and light commercial equipment.
HVAC/R technicians are responsible for:
- Installing heating, cooling and refrigeration systems to specification
- Diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults on residential and commercial equipment
- Servicing refrigerant circuits in line with EPA Section 608 requirements
- Performing preventive maintenance that keeps systems efficient and safe
- Working to OSHA standards on live electrical and pressurised systems
This is skilled trade work. It happens on site, on real equipment, and it cannot be done
remotely — which is exactly why the training is hands-on and on campus.
Program Description
Students who enroll in the 185-clock-hour program acquire knowledge of the heating and
cooling cycles alongside the fundamental principles of the controls and electrical systems used in
HVAC equipment. Students learn to troubleshoot the mechanical and electrical systems of both
residential and commercial HVAC installations, and study the principles behind EPA Section 608
Certification.
Classes are taught in English by a bilingual instructor who speaks Spanish and supports
Spanish-speaking students.
Students completing the program will be able to:
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair HVAC/R systems
- Read and apply wiring diagrams, schematics and manufacturer specifications
- Recover, recycle and charge refrigerant to EPA standards
- Apply OSHA safety procedures, lockout/tagout and personal protective equipment
- Perform entry-level technician duties in a real work environment
On successful completion of all course requirements and financial obligations, students are
awarded a Certificate of Completion.
Industry Certification Exam
Graduates are prepared to sit for the EPA Section 608 certification exam. Students who sit and
pass the exam earn EPA Universal Certification.
Course Outline
- HVAC/R1 — HVAC CORE — 45 clock hours
A foundational grounding in the HVAC/R industry: safety practices, basic electricity, tools and equipment, refrigeration principles, system components, and the workplace skills an entry-level technician needs. - HVAC/R2 — HVAC Level 1 — 45 clock hours
Basic HVAC system operation — heating and cooling systems, airflow principles, and electrical circuits — with hands-on installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting using industry-standard tools. - HVAC/R3 — HVAC Level 2 — 45 clock hours
Advanced troubleshooting, system diagnostics, electrical controls, and refrigeration servicing, with practical experience on residential and light commercial equipment. - HVAC/R4 — HVAC Safety 1 — 45 clock hours
Essential safety standards and regulatory requirements: OSHA guidelines, proper tool use, personal protective equipment, and safe handling of refrigerants and electrical systems. - HVAC/R5 — HVAC Safety 2 — 5 clock hours
Hazard recognition, lockout/tagout procedures, environmental regulations, and emergency response, with emphasis on real-world safety scenarios and OSHA and EPA compliance.
Total: 185 clock hours over 5 weeks.
